Do Candles Expire? Shelf Life Guide
Candles may lack a hard expiry date, yet scented formulas fade with time. Cool storage, FIFO and burn tests stretch shelf life.
Candles do not always carry a food-style expiry date, yet they change with time. In scented formulas, fragrance notes fade, surfaces dull and colours soften. At Rufus Concept, shelf life is read with storage and wax type.
How do you tell age or decline?
If a date is printed, respect it — especially on commercial scented candles. Without a date, use sensory checks:
- Is cold throw clearly weaker?
- Oiling, cracks or white frosting on the surface?
- Faded or blotchy colour?
- Damp, bent or mouldy wick?
Frosting on soy is often cosmetic, not automatic spoilage. An oily film plus sour/chemical odour can mean the formula balance has slipped.
Typical shelf expectations
| Type | Typical span | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Scented soy/paraffin | ~12–24 months if stored well | Fragrance is the fragile part |
| Unscented wax | Longer | Watch surface and wick |
| Beeswax | Long | Natural scent can still fade |
| Gel | Product-dependent | Sensitive to UV and heat |
Ranges are not hard guarantees; hot warehouses, sun and open lids shorten life. Keep fragrance stock cool and closed — aged oil smells weak even in fresh wax.
Storage habits that extend life
- Cool, dry shelf away from direct sun.
- Lid or wrap to limit dust and scent loss.
- Do not stack strong scents side by side; they cross-contaminate.
- Keep wicks dry; wood wicks especially.
- Use FIFO (first in, first out) in stock.
Dating the pour on the label helps you and the customer manage stock. Log supply lots in the same book.
Risks of using degraded candles
Old is not always “toxic,” but weak fragrance disappoints and unstable burns raise soot and tunnelling risk. Do not light mouldy, wet or sharply chemical-smelling candles. Damaged wicks make flame behaviour unpredictable.
- Scraping and remelting is not always safe; contamination can remain.
- Before blending old scented wax into a new batch, run a small burn test.
- Even as décor, open-flame rules still apply.
How to use stock before it fades
Ageing inventory can become sets, workshop samples or a “last boxes” retail push — as long as burn safety is intact. At home: trim, short test burn, watch scent and soot. If fine, use normally; if not, consider décor or controlled remelt into moulds.
FAQ
How long do scented candles last? Often 1–2 years of clear performance when stored well; cold throw then softens.
Do handmade candles spoil? Yes, especially with fragrance and dye. Poor storage shortens life.
How do you spot decline? Weak/off odour, oily breakdown, mould, wick damage, extreme fade.
Summary: candles may lack a hard expiry, but quality drifts. Cool storage, closed packs, FIFO and burn tests stretch shelf life. Date the soy, paraffin and wicks you buy from Rufus Concept to run a professional atelier stock.
Atelier stock card
| Field | Write |
|---|---|
| Pour date | YYYY-MM-DD |
| Wax/fragrance lot | Supplier code |
| Wick | Series + size |
| Last check | Scent + short burn |
That card turns “do candles expire?” from guesswork into measurable stock control. Keep wick and wax matched, and even ageing stock can be used on a plan.
